Expedition Antarctica
Polar and Ornitho-Ecology Group, Institute of Ecology and Evolution, University of Jena
In late January in 2019, researchers count gentoo penguins on Ardley Island, part of the South Shetland Islands. In this way, they are measuring the breeding successes of these polar seabirds in order to document long term climate-related changes in land and marine ecosystems. For almost 40 years, scientists of the research group “Polar and Ornitho-Ecology” have been exploring this part of Antarctica. The focus is on migration, feeding behavior and the development of populations of various bird and seal species. With the help of the results, analyses can be derived on the endangerment of the animals and their habitat. The research team also supports the development of management strategies to better protect the polar ecosystem.
