Insect mobile
Ecosystem Services Group, German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv), and Institute of Biodiversity, University of Jena, in cooperation with the Natural History Museum Denmark
This insect mobile is more than just a vehicle, it is an essential component of ecological research. Because, with the help of the net installed on the roof, flying insects are caught. Volunteers in a Citizen Science project in Germany and Denmark collected the insects. The resulting data were then analyzed by scientists of the Ecosystem Performance Group to study the development of insect populations in semi-natural, agricultural and urban areas. The result: the more urban development there was, the fewer insects were flying in the air. Projects like this allow researchers to assess human land use's impact on natural ecosystems.
